You can compare different models, side-by-side on the website to help you choose which features you want on your adjustable bed.

This adjustable bed is built with MicroHook retention technology, which keeps the mattress(es) in place without mattress retainer bars, which many other adjustable beds require. The Leggett & Platt 2.0 model includes head, foot and pillow tilt adjustments, plus Wallhugger technology to move the bed against the wall and next to your bedside table.

You can plug your phone or tablet into the handy built-in 4-port USB hub located on the bed. This adjustable also offers a sleep timer and an anti-snore preset function, which very few adjustable bed models have available. This bed also offers users 4 custom presets via the mobile app and 2 custom presets via the remote, something else that very few models offer. With all these advanced technological features, this is clearly one of the best adjustable beds on the market today.

Classic Brands Review: The Best Adjustable Bed for the Price

Classic Brands review and Buying Guide by www.dailysleep.org

- Numerous programmable positions

- Wireless remote controls and USB charging ports

- 3-speed massage feature for head and feet

Price:

The Classic Brands Adjustable Comfort bed comes with an incredibly low price, but we surprisingly found it to be one of best adjustable beds on the market, especially for the money.

It provides the standard adjustments of raising the head and/or feet, all via wireless remote control. The bed will also massage your head and/or feet, offering a choice of 3 different speeds. If you want to sit up and watch TV or use your laptop, you can adjust the bed accordingly.

You can also adjust the bed for a zero-gravity or weightless sleep position, which would feel like a recliner. This position eliminates lower back stress, improves blood circulation and relieves pressure points. A zero-gravity bed position also makes it easier to breathe while removing pressure from the heart.

This bed comes with wireless remote-control capabilities and has built-in USB ports so that you can easily charge your mobile devices. But the feature people seem to love the most about this adjustable bed is how quietly the motor operates.

Some people have complained about how heavy this adjustable bed is, but that is to be expected with this type of bed. Our advice is to be prepared for this in advance, knowing that it may be a bit cumbersome to setup. It comes with easy-to-assemble instructions for the frame, and once you have the bed in place, you’ll put the mattress on top. The bed’s weight shouldn’t be a problem because you won’t be constantly moving it around.

The Adjustable Comfort Bed is sleek and modern with an innovative Mattress Retention System with a retainer bar that keeps the mattress from sliding while the bed is being raised or lowered. The bed has an Adjustable Comfort Base that serves as a platform for the bed, so there is no need for a box spring. This also creates additional storage space under the bed. This adjustable bed has some of the very same features that costly ergonomic beds have, but at a fraction of the price. It also comes with a generous 3-year warranty, making this definitely one of the best adjustable beds for the price!

LUCID Most Affordable High-Quality electric bed review and Buying Guide by www.dailysleep.org

- Head inclines independently

- Weight capacity of 750 lbs.

- Very reliable responsive premium motor that runs quietly

Price:

We understand that assembling furniture can be overwhelming for a lot of people, and if you fall into this category the LUCID L300 adjustable bed frame is perfect for you. You can order it on Amazon as one of their “Amazon Choice” products, and it will be shipped to you via Amazon Prime. For an added fee you can arrange for it to be assembled and setup in your home.

Otherwise, you can easily set it up yourself. We’re definitely not DIY experts, but we had no trouble assembling it ourselves without even looking at the instruction manual. It’s just a matter of attaching the legs, plugging everything in, flipping it over and assembling the hooks that ensure the mattress is kept in place, and that’s it. No tools for screwing things in, so it couldn’t be easier to put together.

This adjustable bed is available in Twin XL, Full and Queen sizes. If you already have a King-size mattress you want to use, order 2 Twin XL bed frames and push them together. If your mattress is a California King, you’ll need to buy another base because the L300 doesn’t come in that size.

There is approximately 10.5” of storage space beneath this bed frame, so that’s very helpful as most homes can use more storage space. The L300 bed frame is made of metal wrapped in a charcoal grey polyester fabric, strong enough to support 750 lbs. It has all the features you would expect on a high-quality adjustable bed, which include both head and foot controls with a memory control program that saves your favorite positions.

The wireless remote control comes with a flashlight and there are USB ports on both sides of the bed for easy access. This adjustable bed is equipped with a reliable premium-quality motor, which is highly responsive and very quiet. LUCID offers a 10-year warranty on the L300 bed. With the warranty and all these features the price is surprisingly affordable, making this one of the best adjustable beds currently on the market.

Ghostbed Review: Most Features on a Power Base Bed Frame

Ghostbed review and Buying Guide by www.dailysleep.org

- 5-mode dual acting massage settings

- Frame is 100% steel

- Weight capacity of 750 lbs.

Price:

Ghostbed also offers a Limited Lifetime Warranty on this bed frame, which is very unusual.

This adjustable bed frame comes in Twin XL, Queen, and Split King sizes. If you already have a King-size mattress that you want to use, buy 2 Twin XL bed frames and join them together. If you have a CA King, you’ll need another bed frame because this one doesn’t come in that size.

This frame is built to be 11” off the floor, which gives you a lot of storage space for suitcases and other rarely used items. The light beneath the bed is bright enough to make it easy to find what you need without using a flashlight.

As discussed earlier, Ghostbed produces high-quality products at an affordable price. This may not be the least expensive on our list of the best adjustable beds, but it’s definitely not expensive either. What makes this adjustable power base great is that it’s delivered on your doorstep pre-assembled. All you have to do to set it up is a few minor things. Remove the folded bed frame from the box, upside down, flat on the floor, slide out the locking frame bolts, which will keep the mechanism intact and then attach the retainer bar and the legs. It couldn’t be easier with no tools required!

Milemont review and Buying Guide by www.dailysleep.org

- Wireless remote control makes operation very easy

- Assembly is amazingly quick and easy

- Allows for customizable settings

Price:

The bed allows the user to customize their settings to match their various needs. This is a brilliantly designed bed with all the essential adjustments including an independent 60° head incline and a 45° incline for the feet.

This bed is one of the easiest adjustable beds to assemble and get all set up. The wireless remote control works quietly, without a bunch of confusing buttons. This allows you to easily adjust the base into the position you need and with a click of a button, make it flat again. For someone who doesn’t like things too complicated or technical, this bed is incredibly easy to operate while keeping you well supported and comfortable.

You can easily customize your position to sleep comfortably, elevate you or your partner’s head to minimize snoring, or to watch TV. You can also position the bed for zero gravity to feel weightless by having both your head and legs elevated. This way it feels like you’re sleeping in a recliner chair, but you’re in bed.

What’s also great about this adjustable bed is that it only takes maybe 10 minutes to unpack and get it all set up. The remote control has clearly marked user-friendly buttons. All you have to do is hold the button down until the bed is in the desired position for your back and legs. You can even use a standard mattress if it’s less than 12” thick. The retaining bar will keep your mattress from slipping down. Since this bed is so easy to assemble, setup and use and has all the necessary adjustments, there is no doubt that the Milemont is one of the best adjustable beds currently on the market.

What You Need to Know to Choose the Best Adjustable Bed for Meeting Your Needs

Technically speaking, an “adjustable bed” is any bed with a base built with a mechanism to raise and lower the bed into a variety of sleeping positions. Hospitals were the first to use adjustable beds for injured patients that required an angled sleep position. Adjustable beds also help relieve pain and swelling and improve blood circulation, which is great for patients recovering from surgery.

But now there are several prominent mattress brands that have started producing adjustable bed bases that are very similar to the ones found in hospitals and other medical facilities. Basic adjustable beds can be raised and lowered at the head of the bed and at the foot, providing multiple positions for the user to choose from. Other common functions include anti-snore incline, massage settings, a zero-gravity position and silent alarms. Most newer model adjustable beds are equipped with remote controls and some of the best adjustable beds have Apple and Android apps for wireless operation.

This article will go over the advantages and disadvantages of adjustable bed and some factors to consider while trying to find the best adjustable bed to meet your needs.

Two Categories of Adjustable Beds

There are two different categories of adjustable beds and these are “lifestyle” and “proling.” Here’s what you need to know about each:

Lifestyle

A lifestyle adjustable bed is the simplest type, the most basic. They usually allow users to raise their upper body, but they’re not equipped with the more complicated functions, like raising and lowering the entire bed.

Lifestyle beds basically provide users with some additional comfort, but not much else. If you are looking for an adjustable bed to help yourself or someone else with a specific health or therapeutic need, you would likely be better served with a proling adjustable bed.

Proling

Proling beds are designed with a lot more features and functions than lifestyle beds. You can typically adjust a proling bed into many different postural positions. Most allow the user or caregiver to raise and lower the entire bed as needed for treatment and/or to get in and out of bed.

Many consumers assume that hospitals are the only ones using proling beds. That may have been true in the past, but no longer. There are a lot of different proling bed models, designed to look good and for at home use.

You may have heard of a “sit up bed.” This is a 2-part proling bed, which only allows the user to raise their upper body. So, the 2 positions are flat, and the upper body raised. A 3-part proling bed is one that can also bend at the knee for a bent leg position that keeps you from slipping. A 4-part proling bed has all those functions plus allows for a variety of foot positions as well.

Pros & Cons of Using an Electric Bed

As with most products, there are benefits and drawbacks that come with using an adjustable bed. Before you decide to buy one, it’s important that you know the pros and cons, as follows:

Pros

Relieve Pain

People suffering from chronic pain and pressure points can often find relief with an adjustable bed. You can customize the position for comfort, support where you need it and even get several types of massage. People with painful medical conditions like arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome and scoliosis can often experience relief. Adjustable beds can also increase circulation by raising the head and/or legs.

Minimize Snoring

Elevating the head to just the right angle can substantially reduce snoring. People who suffer from sleep apnea or other conditions associated with snoring may find sleeping with an elevated head quite helpful. Some of the best adjustable beds come with an “anti-snore” feature and various settings that adjust the head at different angles and in various positions.

Greater Comfort

Adjustable beds are made with many different reclining positions that allow you to sit up at an incline or angle that you find most comfortable. You can adjust the bed so that you can comfortably read, watch TV, use your laptop or eat in bed. Furthermore, larger adjustable beds often have dual controls so each person can operate their side separately. If you are still sitting up and reading in bed when your partner is ready to go to sleep, he/she can adjust their side to lay flat while you’re still sitting up.

Dual Controls for Couples

Adjustable beds with split bases are perfect for couples with different preferences. Many adjustable beds come in a Split King size, which really is 2 Twin XL size bases that have been joined together. Some models even come in a Split Queen size as well as a Split California King.

Easier Access

If you have difficulty moving around, setting your adjustable so that it’s upright will likely make it a lot easier for you to safely get in and out of bed. Just elevating or lowering your legs or torso can also relieve the pain caused by spending so much time in bed.

If you’re a caregiver, it may be much easier to tend to your patient if he/she is in an upright position, rather than lying down. An adjustable bed can easily raise them up into this position when you need to tend to them.

Wireless Controls

The best adjustable beds available on the market today can be programmed with either a wireless app or a remote control. Users or their caregivers can adjust the bed without having to deal with a bunch of cords or outlets. You will find older models with wired remotes.

Convenience Features

Many of today’s adjustable beds have built-in convenience features. These could include numerous USB charging ports to under-bed lighting.

Cons

Expensive

You can find some adjustable beds at a fairly low price, but most come with a price tag anywhere from $1,000 to $3,500. The size of the bed, quality of its base, and number of built-in features and settings all factor into the price.

Technology & Mechanics

Just like other technical and mechanical devices today, fully electric adjustable beds can malfunction and/or break down. Even with the most advanced technological mechanisms built in to prevent this, it’s always a possibility.

This is exactly why you should find out whether the bed you’re considering comes with a warranty, so that you will have no trouble getting a replacement should you encounter these problems.

May be Noisy

Although some brands go to great lengths to produce quieter adjustable beds, most are made with metal hinges that move when an electrically powered motor is activated. When these components are used together to adjust the bed, it’s going to make some noise.

Heavy

The base of an adjustable bed is not lightweight, it’s going to weigh at least 100 lbs., with some weighing more than 300 lbs. So, they can be difficult to move around unless they have wheels that lock in place.

Mattress Issues

Some types of mattresses, like hybrids and innersprings, are not compatible with adjustable beds. But memory foam or latex mattresses can typically be used on most adjustable beds.

Must be Assembled

Assembling and setting up an adjustable bed might be a breeze for an avid DIYer but for some it’s way too much trouble. Some brands offer the option of White Glove delivery for an extra fee, so when the bed arrives someone comes in and assembles it.

Style & Design

If you’ve gone to a lot of trouble and expense decorating your home, you may not appreciate the basic style of an adjustable bed with a metal frame, which is usually visible.

However, some of the best adjustable beds give you the option of buying a headboard and footboard, which makes them look more like regular beds. You can also make up the bed with a nice bedding set of matching sheets, pillowcases, shams and comforter. This can help it blend in with your décor.

People Who Would Likely Benefit from Using an Electic Bed

Adjustable beds cost quite a bit more than what people usually spend on a bed, however they can be the perfect solution for someone who cannot sleep lying down flat or who could sleep more soundly if they could adjust their bed to be more comfortable, either because of a medical condition or for some other reason.

The following are examples of the type of people who could find an adjustable bed beneficial:

People Who Snore

If you’re one of those people who snore, sleeping in a raised position is known to open up the nasal airways, which can reduce snoring. This is especially helpful to snorers who sleep on their back, as this usually exacerbates the snoring.

People with Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is typically exacerbated when the sufferer sleeps on their back. If you have sleep apnea your symptoms would likely improve if you slept in an elevated position because it would likely open up your nasal airways.

People with Poor Circulation

People suffering from poor circulation often feel numb or cold in their arms and legs and this can be extremely uncomfortable, especially when you’re trying to sleep. Elevating certain parts of the body, like the knees and/or feet, higher than your heart you can improve your circulation.

Pregnant Women

Pregnant women often find it difficult to get comfortable in bed at night. Many are in pain and have poor circulation as well. An adjustable bed can relieve some of the strain, improve blood flow and by positioning yourself in zero gravity, you can find relief from all that extra weight.

People in Pain

Anyone who has suffered from chronic or acute pain know how difficult it can be to get to sleep. If none of the normal sleep positions helps you get to sleep, you could end up with long-term insomnia. With an adjustable bed you could control the precise position your body is in while sleeping. So, with trial and error you can find a position that takes the most amount of stress off the body.

Aging Couples

When people get up in years they often suffer from limited mobility and many of them are light sleepers as well. An adjustable bed can make it easier for aging couples to get in and out of bed. It can also help them find a position that helps them sleep more deeply.

Mattresses that Work on an Adjustable Bed Base

If you plan on buying an adjustable bed, you’ll want to know if your mattress would work on top of the base you’re considering. If you’re not sure, you’ll need to contact the manufacturer and they’ll tell you whether your mattress is compatible with that particular bed frame. The types of mattresses that are likely to work on top of an adjustable bed base are as follows:

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses entirely consist of synthetic materials, which makes them quite flexible with the ability to closely mold to the bed frame and the sleeper no matter which position they’re in.

Latex Foam

Latex foam mattresses can either consist of synthetic or natural latex foam, neither of which are quite as moldable as memory foam. Much like a memory foam mattress, a latex mattress would be very compatible with an adjustable bed. They also have more airflow than memory foam and therefore feel cooler and more comfortable to sleep on.

Air Beds

Air beds are divided into chambers, which are filled with air and have padded foam, or some other soft material layered on top. Air beds are typically adjustable, so the user can control the firmness of each chamber for maximum comfort. Some air beds are specifically designed to be used on top of an adjustable bed frame.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are filled with metal coils that support the body. While many people love this type of mattress, they are known for creating pressure points on the body that can be uncomfortable. Some innerspring mattresses are a type of hybrid because they are layered with memory and latex foam to make them more comfortable.

All the mattresses discussed above can usually be found in standard bed sizes, which adjustable beds are made in as well. Many of these mattresses also come in split or half-split models. When shopping for an adjustable bed just choose the size you’ve already been sleeping in as long as it’s comfortable for you. Most adjustable bed brands sell Twin XL, Queen, King and California King sizes, but Full-size adjustable beds are rare.

If the mattress you already have is in fairly good shape and it’s one of the types listed above that work well with an adjustable bed, you don’t need to buy a new mattress. But if you do need a new mattress, it may be less expensive overall if you bought a “sleep system” that includes a mattress with the adjustable bed.

The Most Beneficial Positions to Sleep in When Using an Electric Bed

As we’ve mentioned earlier in this article, people who sleep on their back can benefit enormously from using an adjustable bed. But how do stomach and side sleepers fare? It may seem odd for a stomach or side sleeper to have an adjustable bed, but you would be surprised how comfortable an adjustable bed can be for people who sleep in these positions.

Before we go any further, you need to know that stomach sleeping is really the unhealthiest of all sleeping positions. Medical professionals have found that sleeping on your stomach can cause long-term chronic back pain. Why? Because sleeping on your stomach shifts your weight to your torso, causing it to sink into the mattress and overextending your spine. Keep doing this and you will end up with pressure points along with chronic lower back pain.

An adjustable bed won’t make this sleeping position any healthier, but it may help you find other sleep positions that are better for you. If you are usually uncomfortable sleeping on your side or back, adjusting the bed gives you lots of ways to angle yourself. This way you can find an angle that helps you sleep on your side or back comfortably. In time you may prefer sleeping on your side or back over sleeping on your stomach.

People who typically sleep on their sides can definitely benefit from sleeping on an adjustable bed by having the ability to angle their head. Sleeping on your side puts undue pressure on your shoulders and hips, which leads to pressure point and hip pain. Being able to angle your head can lift some of the pressure in those spots so that you can relax. Side sleepers often figure out their coziest sleep position by fiddling around with the bed’s head and foot articulation feature.

Factors to Consider in Determining Which Adjustable Bed Would Best Meet Your Needs

Better Sleep

The first thing you should consider is your specific needs. What got you interested in buying an adjustable bed in the first place? If it’s to be more comfortable reading or watching TV in bed, you really don’t need all the advanced features. However, if you’re trying to find something to help you get a better night’s sleep, you need to pay attention to the sleep-promoting features built into the base.

Size

Whenever you buy a piece of furniture for your bedroom, size is going to be a main consideration. You can find adjustable beds in the same sizes as regular beds, ranging from Twin size on up to California King. The size is going to depend on how much space you have and how many people will be using the bed.

You’ll need to measure the area where you plan on placing the adjustable bed and compare those measurements to the sizes offered by each brand you’re considering. Sizes are usually uniform within the same brand, but they may not be across several different brands.

When determining the bed size, you’ll need to decide whether you will use the legs on the bed you’re planning to buy, or instead use the base on the bed you already have? If you plan on using your existing base, you’ll need to make sure the adjustable bed and mattress fits on top of it.

Weight Capacity

When considering your options, you must check the bed’s weight capacity. This will tell you how much weight the bed can safely support, lift and hold securely in position.

The last thing you want is an adjustable bed that won’t adjust unless you get out of bed to change the position. You also don’t want a bed that breaks down because it couldn’t support the weight of the person using it.

The label will tell you what the bed’s weight capacity is. Most adjustable beds being sold today can support up to 750 lbs. While that may seem like a lot, you need to factor in the weight of the mattress, as well as the person using the bed and any items that will routinely be on the bed, like a laptop, food tray, pets, books, and etc.

Accessories

Each adjustable bed will have a number of options to choose from. While some beds are operated manually the best adjustable beds have an electric motor that powers the raising and lowering of the various sections of the bed. A remote-control device is used to make the adjustments, and wireless remotes are becoming more common because they’re more convenient to use.

In deciding which bed to get, you will want to look at how much can be done with the remote. With some adjustable beds the remote only operates the most fundamental functions, and you’ll have to use an app to perform all the rest.

You need to find out if you can download an app on your phone to control the bed. This really would be the most convenient way to control the adjustments, rather than always using the remote.

Wallhugger Technology & Engineering

The best adjustable beds of today come with Wallhugger technology. Without this, you’ll have a problem when the upper body area of the bed is raised. This pushes the person in the bed forward so now they’re unable to reach their bedside table.

Wallhugger engineering addresses this issue by automatically moving the bed back against the wall when the bed is adjusted into the upright position. This allows the person using the bed to reach their bedside table.

Type of Mattress

You’re also going to want to know whether the adjustable bed you’re considering includes a mattress, and if it does, what type of mattress? If the bed you like best does not come with a mattress and you don’t already have one that will work, you’ll need to buy one separately. You’ll need to ensure that the mattress you buy is the right size and that it will adapt well to the adjustments.

For example, a spring mattress may not be ideal because some are too rigid. Air mattresses are designed to be flat, so these would not be your best option unless you were just using it for a short time while waiting for the right mattress to be delivered. However, don’t be surprised if your air mattress gets damaged in the process.

Memory foam mattresses are one of the best options because they are flexible, move quickly and have no problem going flat just as quickly.

It is recommended that you check with the manufacturer on which type of mattress would work best on their adjustable base. If they offer these for sale, find out if you can get a better price by buying the bed and mattress as a package deal.

AC or DC Power

The bases on the best adjustable beds are electronic and need a power source for their electric motors, which is what runs the adjustments. You’ll need to plug your adjustable base into an electrical outlet, but some beds run on AC (alternating current) power and others convert that to DC (direct current). AC motors have more power than DC, but the downside is that they make more noise.

Price

Unfortunately, adjustable beds don’t come cheap, so you’ll find yourself paying $450 at the very least and likely more. But when you consider all the benefits they offer, including the ability to automatically adjust your bed anytime you want, they’re worth every penny.

So, prices start at about $450 and can go well up into the thousands for an adjustable bed equipped with advanced technology and all the bells and whistles. Most people can find an affordable middle ground, a bed with all the features and functions they need at a price that works for them.

Aside from the cost of the bed, you’ll need to figure in the cost of maintenance down the road. Anything with moving parts is going to need some type of maintenance and you can’t count on this being covered under the guarantee.

A lot of companies are willing to meet their customers halfway – the customer pays for shipping and they agree to replace the parts. The longer you have the bed, the more you will be expected to pay to keep it in good working order.

Looks

Will the base fit inside your existing bed frame? Most will, but if it doesn’t, you’ll want to picture how the frame will look in your bedroom. Some adjustable bed bases have an industrial look to them and come in either aluminum or black. Others are upholstered in a nice looking neutral colored fabric. So, when you’re thinking about how this bed frame will look in your bedroom, you can also think about whether you could use some extra storage space under the bed.

Package Deal

Many people need not only an adjustable base, but a new mattress as well. If this is the case with you, find out if you can get a package deal by bundling the two together. Many companies are happy to give customers a discount if they buy both at the same time.

Main Functions & Features

An adjustable bed is built with a base that’s placed in a specific spot. The base has moving parts joined by hinges that control the bed’s various positions. While the design, construction and how the adjustments are made vary a great deal depending on the brand and model, the vast majority of adjustable beds on the market today do the following:

Incline Upper Body

The bed can be adjusted to incline the head and mid-section at an angle that can range from 58° to 80°.

Incline Lower Body

The bed can be adjusted to incline the legs and feet at an angle that can range from 30° to 45°. However, some models do not offer lower body adjustments.

Support 400+ Lbs.

The bed can support a person weighing 400 lbs. at minimum, although some models have a weight capacity of more than 800 lbs.

Adjust via Remote & Wireless Control

The bed allows the user to change settings using a wired remote, wireless remote or app.

Some Additional Functions

Raise & Lower the Bed

Some adjustable beds can be raised or lowered at the legs to change the overall height of the bed from the ground. Some models offer leg extensions that can be purchased separately.

Raise Head & Foot Sections

The main feature of an adjustable bed is its ability to raise the head and foot sections. The bases of most adjustable beds can elevate the head from 0° to 60° and the foot section, 0° to 45°. This can provide many benefits.

Raising the head section allows you to sit up in bed to read, eat, use your laptop, watch TV and more. Furthermore, just like a wedge pillow, tilting the head upwards can help a variety of health conditions, like heavy snoring and sleep apnea among others.

Raising the legs and feet can help relieve painful swollen legs, improve circulation and reduce lower back pain pressure.

Dual Controls

Some of the best adjustable beds in the larger sizes have dual controls, so each side of the bed can be adjusted separately. This is a great feature for couples who have different needs and preferences.

A singleton buying a smaller adjustable bed will usually not need this feature, although some might like the idea of a larger bed with each side adjusted differently.

Zero-Gravity

The zero-gravity position is when the legs are raised to a higher level than the head, which results in an S-shaped sleeping surface to give you the feeling of being in zero gravity. This position is known to relieve pain and pressure and may be beneficial for people with high blood pressure and/or lower back pain.

Anti-Snore

People who sleep with a partner who snores can hardly every get a good night’s sleep. Fortunately, there are adjustable beds equipped with an anti-snoring feature that can be preset. When this feature is activated it raises the bed 7° on the snorer’s, which opens their nasal passages and reduces the tissue vibrations that make so much noise.

Preset Timed Adjustments

People who are always readjusting their sleep position during the night can benefit from this feature. An adjustable bed equipped with a sleep timer can be preset to readjust to a flat surface after a preset period of time.

Remembers Previous Positions

Some of the best adjustable beds are able to remember the sleeper’s previous or favorite position and using single-touch remote technology it can automatically adjust to that position. Some beds even offer up to 4 different preset memory positions.

Retainer Bars

It’s important that an adjustable bed have a system in place to secure the mattress, so it doesn’t slip off the base while being adjusted. Most adjustable beds are equipped with 4 retainer bars, with 2 at the head and 2 more At the foot. Other beds have their 4 bars at each corner, and some have just 1 bar installed at the food of the bed. However, some beds do not have any retainer bars, and instead use a series of hooks to secure the mattress.

Wallhugger Technology

On standard adjustable beds without the benefit of Wallhugger technology, when your upper body is raised up you naturally move forward, placing you too far away to reach your bedside table. This forces you to twist around, hurting your neck and back if you need to reach your table.

The best adjustable beds are equipped with Wallhugger technology that automatically slides the bed back against the wall when it raises the head. This keeps the bed in the same place it was previously so you can reach your bedside table when you’re sitting up in bed.

Headboard Brackets

If you plan on attaching a headboard to your adjustable bed, you need to know whether or not it comes with the metal brackets to do this. Your bed may include them, or you may need to buy them separately.

Massage

Some adjustable beds are equipped with a massage function. It might be a full-body wave that runs the length of the bed or it may vibrate in more localized areas like the areas of the head and feet.

Being massaged relieves pain, increases circulation and relaxes the body overall. Adjustable beds with this function offer a range of intensities that you can adjust using the remote control or an app.

The massage function may not be a vital feature, but it’s certainly something you would benefit from, especially if you suffer from chronic pain, poor circulation or are under stress and this helps you relax.

Unfortunately, the motor that runs the massage function can be noisy. If you’re ordering an adjustable bed with this feature, make sure that it doesn’t make so much noise that it keeps you from relaxing or falling asleep.

Silent Alarm

Adjustable beds come with an alarm to wake you up, but it does it gently with a wave-like sensation or vibrations, rather than a loud ring or buzzing noise.

Under-Bed Lighting

Adjustable beds are often equipped with under-bed lighting, so if you need to get up during the night you can see your path forward. The lighting also makes it easier to find items stored under your bed and improves the overall look of your room in the dark.

USB Ports & AC Outlets

Some adjustable beds come with built-in USB ports and/or AC electrical outlets so that users have a convenient place to charge their devices.

Memory Feature

Most adjustable beds have a remote-control device for adjusting the bed, but oftentimes you have to press it several times to get the bed to move. This is aggravating and why we recommend that you choose an adjustable bed with a memory feature you can program. This will be typically incorporated into the bed’s remote control or a mobile app.

Once you get the bed into your desired position, you can then save it for future use. From that point on you can move the bed into that same position by pressing the button just once. The remote will also come with pre-programmed positions that you can use as well.

Pillow or Head Tilt Feature

Most adjustable beds come with features that elevate the head and foot areas, but that’s really not enough for a lot of people. Plus, many only raise your upper body 60° and that isn’t enough for you to watch TV or even read a book unless you use a pillow.

If you’re forced to use a pillow to sit upright in bed, you’ll spend a lot of time adjusting it, so what you really need is a pillow or head tilting feature. This will tilt the bed up an additional 30°, so your head can rest at a 90° angle.

This is the most comfortable position for watching TV, reading, eating and using a laptop in bed. This is why we strongly recommend that you get an adjustable bed with a pillow or head tilting feature like the Leggett & Platt 2.0, which we’ve reviewed above as one of the best adjustable beds of 2020.

Return Policies & Warranties

Two of the most common complaints that owners of adjustable beds make concern the return policies and/or warranty coverage.

Trial Periods

Many mattress brands offer customers a free trial period, some lasting up to a year. Being allowed to return a mattress you’re not satisfied with after using it for that length of time makes it far less risky to order online. A lot of people assume that if a particular brand offers a free trial on a mattress, they’ll do the same on an adjustable bed. Unfortunately, this isn’t necessarily true. Very few brands offer a free trial on an adjustable bed, and the few that do typically have a much shorter trial period than they offer on their mattresses. The vast majority of adjustable bed brands sell them as a final sale item. This is why it’s so important that you ask ahead of time whether the bed you’re considering comes with a free trial period.

Return Policies

Unlike many mattress brands, customers who buy an adjustable bed are rarely offered a sleep trial and many companies don’t even allow returns. Some brands will allow the customer to exchange the base they’re dissatisfied with for a different model. But this can mean having to pay for shipping and handling and perhaps upgrades. If customers are permitted to return an adjustable bed, they will very likely be charged a restocking fee, which could cost them hundreds of dollars.

Warranties

Adjustable beds typically come with a warranty ranging from 3 to 40 years. A longer warranty period is more attractive to buyers, but they are often misleading. When you read the fine print, you may come across terms like “prorated” and “non-prorated,” which can be confusing.

A non-prorated warranty says that the manufacturer of the bed will replace or repair a defective bed without any cost to the owner, except in some cases for shipping and handling.

Prorated coverage is when the brand states that the owner is obligated to pay a percentage of the cost of the adjustable bed base when it’s sent in for replacement or repairs should there be a defect. The percentage increases for every year the product is owned and used.

For example, an adjustable bed with a price tag of $2,000 may have a 20-year warranty, with the 3 years of the warranty non-prorated. But if the owner starts having problems the bed in the 4th year of ownership, they must pay 20% of the amount they paid for the bed ($400) if it needs to be replaced or repaired. This charge will go up in prorated 5% increments each year thereafter. So, in the 5th year of ownership the charge to replace or repair the bed would be $500. In the 6th year it would go up to $600, and so on. In the 15th year of ownership, the owner would be charged 75% or $1,500 to have the defective bed base replaced or repaired.

Clearly, these prorated charges can add up significantly. Therefore, people in the market for an adjustable bed should determine what the brand’s return policies are before buying, as well as the warranty coverage. Read the fine print to make sure you agree with these terms before going forward with the purchase.

Special Considerations for Seniors

If the adjustable bed you’re planning to buy is for an elderly person, you need to consider accessibility and safety more than usual. Make sure the bed can be lowered so that the user can easily get in and out without risking their safety.

It’s also important to consider any medical conditions they may be dealing with. Adjustable beds can be very therapeutic for a broad range of medical conditions that typically come with aging.

Lastly, as people get older it’s more important to get a good night’s sleep. So, make sure the bed you buy can be adjusted for maximum comfort, because without that no one can get a good night’s sleep.

Health Benefits

Most people looking for an adjustable bed are interested in the health benefits it can offer, with the hope that it can help them get a good night’s sleep. If you have health issues, an adjustable bed can make a huge difference in the quality of your sleep. Adjustable beds can also help pregnant women be more comfortable in bed so that they too can get a good night’s sleep.

The following are some of the medical conditions in which an adjustable bed can be helpful:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Obstructive sleep apnea in a condition in which the airways close while someone is sleeping, waking them up as they gasp for air. Persistent OSA over a long period of time can result in chronic fatigue and some even develop heart disease. An adjustable bed can elevate the head, which can open the airway and relieve the symptoms of OSA.

Snoring

If you sleep with a partner who keeps you up at night because of their snoring, inclining the upper end of the mattress under their head will open up their airway and eliminate the snoring. This will help you both get a better night’s sleep.

Heartburn & Acid Reflux

Heartburn and acid reflux can be caused by a spicy meal right before bedtime or be the result of a digestive disorder. If this is something you suffer from, raising your head in bed at night can help your digestion and prevent acid reflux. As a further benefit, since these beds help digestion, they can keep users from undue weight gain.

Asthma

When you sleep at an angle it reduces the amount of nasal and postnasal drip. This exacerbates asthma, making it hard to breathe. By raising your head to a 45° angle, you can dramatically reduce your asthma symptoms and avoid a recurrence.

Chronic Pain

Millions of people suffer from some form of chronic pain in their neck, shoulders, back, hip or feet. If you count yourself as one of these individuals, an adjustable bed can certainly help you feel better. Pain often results from the uneven distribution of weight, pressure points and too much stress on the spine. By utilizing the head articulation feature on an adjustable bed, you can relieve joint and spine pressure. Adjusting it to a zero-gravity position can relieve the stress on your spine and pressure points.

Arthritis

Arthritis is painful inflammation in the joints. An adjustable bed can relieve arthritic discomfort by distributing your weight evenly throughout the bed, which takes the pressure off your joints. You can also get in and out of an adjustable bed easier than a standard bed by lowering it closer to the floor and/or angling it to make it easier to lift yourself off the mattress.

Painful Inflammation

If you ever had a sprained ankle that became swollen, you were likely told to elevate it. Being able to elevate your head and/or feet can relieve painful swelling wherever it may be. Many people suffer from edema, which is fluid that accumulates in a particular area causing swelling. By elevating that area of the body, you can eliminate or at least reduce the swelling.

Poor Circulation

If you suffer from poor circulation or even a heart condition, by laying flat on your bed you are making it harder for your heart to pump blood throughout your body. With an adjustable bed you can place yourself in a zero-gravity position, which will improve your circulation while reducing the pressure on your body, all of which makes it easier for your heart to keep doing its job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How safe are adjustable beds?

Adjustable beds are absolutely safe if they’re used properly. It’s important to keep young children and pets away because the base could cause an injury. Some models come with safety features, such as a gravity fall and pinch detectors to ensure that children and pets stay safe when the bed is being raised and lowered, or if the power shuts down.

Are adjustable beds very durable?

Yes, absolutely. However, someone repeatedly sitting on the edge or the corners can cause the bed to warp in those areas, including the frame, foam and/or struts. Standing or jumping on the bed can result in damage to the frame as well as the motors. If you’re thinking about tilting or placing the base on its side, think again because you could damage the legs and the screws that hold them in place.

Can the regular mattress I already have be used on an adjustable bed?

In most cases, yes! Most adjustable beds can accommodate a regular memory foam, latex foam or innerspring mattress. However, the foam options seem to work better due to their flexibility.

Some adjustable beds come with the mattress included, which guarantees that they’re compatible. If you have a mattress you want to use, you need to check ahead of time with the brand to make sure it will fit and work well with the base. If you have a choice of different firmness levels for the mattress, a special adjustable base wouldn’t be needed to derive the benefits.

How can I make sure I’m choosing the best adjustable bed to meet my needs?

You’ll want to consider what you can afford, which features you need, and which ones you can do without. If all you want is to get more comfortable in bed, all you may need is an adjustable mattress without the base, or an adjustable base without the mattress. Either one may be able to change the position of your head and feet if that’s all you need.

If you’re seeking more, you may need a whole new bed that provides you with a full sleep system and includes the adjustable base plus the adjustable mattress.

Adjustable beds come with a remote control that you can use to make the adjustments and some of the best adjustable beds can be controlled with a mobile app as well. They allow users to customize the position they sleep in, elevate their head to keep them from snoring or raise it even further so they can read in bed or watch TV. You can even put yourself in a zero-gravity position, so you feel as if you’re weightless with both your head and legs elevated. This is the ultimate in comfort because it feels like you’re in a recliner.

Is an adjustable bed really worth the cost?

People who have come up with the money to buy an adjustable bed say they are worth every penny. Having said that, they aren’t cheap. Adjustable beds can start at $400 with prices going all the way up to several thousand. If you can afford to pay top dollar for a top-quality mattress and adjustable base combo, equipped with smart technology, you’ll end up paying well over $3,000. However, you should be able to find a very easy-to-use high-quality adjustable bed that will elevate your head and feet for less than $1,000.

Are adjustable beds safe for seniors and the elderly to use?

Yes, definitely. Adjustable beds are actually recommended for older people, especially if they’re in pain or have trouble moving around. They can easily control the settings with the remote or a wireless app and immediately get more comfortable in bed.

Seniors suffering from hip pain and/or swollen legs can find relief in a zero-gravity position, which a lot of adjustable beds offer. They would also be a lot more comfortable sitting upright in bed when they’re watching TV or reading. Rather than propping themselves up with pillows, an adjustable bed gives them all the support they need to comfortably sit upright.

The main thing to consider is the height of the bed and whether there is a setting that allows them to lower it themselves to more easily get in and out of bed. The best adjustable beds are fully electric with controls that allow the user to easily raise and lower the height of the bed.

Do adjustable beds help with back pain?

Yes, they do. People with chronic back pain, especially if it’s in the lower back can definitely find relief with an adjustable bed.

Back pain is often the result of poor posture and by resting in a zero-gravity position you can relieve the pressure on the muscles in the lower back, allowing them to totally relax for a change.

If you can’t get comfortable sitting up in bed to read, watch TV or use your laptop it’s probably because you can’t get enough support from the pillows you’re using. This can lead to back pain because your entire back really needs to be fully supported when you’re sitting upright, and an adjustable bed can do this.

How can a fully electric adjustable bed help a disabled person?

Disabilities vary, but if the individual is in pain or has problems with mobility, a fully electric adjustable bed can be a big help by enabling them to change positions in bed with the press of a button.

People with Parkinson’s disease are often in a lot of pain and have trouble controlling their muscles, so an electric bed could help them and others with similar problems tremendously.

Before making your choice, make sure you know how tall the user is and whether or not they’ll need to lower the bed to safely get in and out. The best adjustable beds have settings that allow the user to raise and lower the height of the bed as needed.

Could a “remote control mattress” help someone stop snoring?

Yes. Raising the upper body of someone who snores will keep their nasal airways open and prevent them from snoring and can even keep them from developing sleep apnea. Adjustable beds have been a huge help to people who are constantly nudging their spouse or partner to stop snoring. Now they both can get a good night’s sleep.

The best adjustable bed for a couple who sleeps together would be one with dual controls so that each one could adjust the controls on their side of the bed according to their preferences.

Will Medicare pay for an adjustable bed?

Medicare will only pay for manually operated and semi-electric hospital beds for patients who qualify, not the kind of adjustable beds we’ve reviewed here. Adjustable beds are not very different from a lot hospital beds because they can be put into a lot of the same positions and they offer health benefits as well. The main difference is that hospital beds are not very attractive, so would hardly blend in with your décor. They are also not equipped with wireless remote or mobile app controllers or massage functions. If you want to find out if Medicare would pay for you or a loved one to have a hospital bed, you could probably find out from the treating physician or from Medicare directly.

Does it make sense to shop online for a bed?

These days people are safely buying all kinds of home furnishings online, including mattresses and bed frames. Many consumers have no trouble putting their trust in online retailers. Mattresses can be tightly rolled up and placed inside sturdy boxes for shipment within the continental U.S., with some brands also shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories as well as Canada.

The main challenge of buying a mattress online is knowing whether it will feel comfortable or not since you won’t have a chance to try it first. This is why it’s so important to find out about a company’s return policies before making a purchase. If you receive a defective mattress, most brands have that covered with a warranty, but if the mattress is just too firm or soft, that’s a trickier issue. Just make sure that the company has a return policy that works for you just in case you don’t like the mattress.

Can adjustable beds pose a danger to children and pets?

Adjustable beds have a lot of moving parts and this can be dangerous for children and pets because they can easily be pinched or even crushed if they’re in the way when the bed is changing position. It is vitally important that you make sure that your child, grandchild, dog or cat has is not anywhere near your bed before you try changing positions. Kids in the home old enough to understand must be told of the dangers and to never hide under or behind the bed. They must also be told to never fiddle with the controls or to try operating it without adult supervision. If there are very young or developmentally delayed children in the home or immature teenagers, it would be best to keep the remote control hidden and the bedroom door closed.

Can an adjustable bed be beneficial for my health?

There are quite a few health benefits of using an adjustable bed. Having the ability to easily change sleeping positions can relieve pressure and/or pain for many individuals. People suffering from sleep apnea can be helped by having their upper body and head elevated, which opens their airways. The best adjustable beds have a preset for the zero-gravity position, which makes you feel weightless and therefore reduces strain on the heart and on other parts of the body. If an adjustable bed can help you consistently get a better night’s sleep, that alone will improve your health.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, you may want to reevaluate the type of bed and mattress you’re sleeping on. Many mattress brands publish guides to help consumers determine which type of mattress and level of firmness would be most comfortable for their body type and sleeping position. This information should help you decide whether you need another type of mattress.

Can I get an adjustable base that will blend with my existing furniture and décor?

Whenever you add a piece of furniture to any room it’s important to make sure it will fit, so you’re going to need accurate measurements. Will you need to rearrange things to accommodate the bed? If your concern is more aesthetics, you can find these bed bases in a variety of colors and finishes. Some of the best adjustable beds have a modern look and do not resemble hospital beds at all.

Do the adjustable base and mattress always come together?

No, not usually. But some brands have models that include both. What you’ll commonly find are brands that produce a range of mattresses specifically designed to work with their adjustable bed frames. You can buy the bed frame and perhaps use your existing mattress or buy theirs separately.

What if I want a headboard on my adjustable bed?

You can attach a headboard onto most adjustable beds, although some come with the headboard already built in. Special brackets are needed to properly attach the headboard, which you will need to purchase separately.

Is an adjustable bed difficult to assemble?

Most adjustable bed frames will be delivered largely preassembled. However, there will be a few small elements that you will have to install yourself. If you’re not much of a DIYer you may want to take advantage of a White Glove delivery option, which many of the best adjustable bed companies now offer. For an extra fee, a professional will come and assemble the adjustable bed for you.
