Pinzon Velvet Flannel Sheet Set Review

Pinzon Sheets Review

- Two-sided double-napped finish
- 190g heavyweight 100 percent combed cotton
- Breathable weave of velvet flannel

Price:

When the colder months hit, you want high-quality, thick sheets that keep your warm. Most people tend to get flannel bedding a part of their winter must-haves. If you’re one of those individuals, then you need to consider the Pinzon Velvet Flannel Sheet Set. It’s made of a 100 percent combed cotton fabric with a four-inch hem on the flat sheet and pillowcases. It’s got a breathable weave, which helps to produce a soft, comfortable, and lavish feel.

The manufacturer puts the combed yarn through a time-intensive combing process, lining the fibers completely straight and parallel, producing a more compact yarn. The process ensures the removal of short, uneven fibers and debris that could cause the yarn to weaken and make the sheets feel rough. With combed yarn, the fibers are longer, giving the sheets extra strength, super-smooth feel and a glossy appearance.

While other fabrics are measured by thread count, flannel is actually measured by how many ounces are needed to make up a square yard. The Pinzon Velvet Flannel Sheet Set has a 190 grams per square meter flannel weight, adding to its supple softness and durability. With the napping on both sides, you get an increase in velvety smoothness while also staying warm in the colder seasons.

This sheet set meets the OEKO-TEX standard, meaning it’s safe for you and the environment. If you want luxury bed sheets that provide you with the most warmth when it’s cold outside, then you need the Pinzon Velvet Flannel Sheet Set.

What Makes Luxury Sheets The Best Option For Your Bedroom

Experts often say you should act as if you have what you need to attain your goals. If your goal is to look as if you live the luxurious life, why not invest in luxury sheets? It’s not financially feasible to purchase a home or car you cannot easily afford, causing you to actually lose sleep. With luxury sheets, on the other hand, you invest a small amount of money and improve your sleep.

And, if you sleep with someone, these sheets can help to boost the romance between you.

How is their durability compared to your typical, cheaper sheets? They are much more durable, but the only way to know for sure is to buy them for yourself.

How Do Manufacturers Designate Sheets As Being Luxury Sheets?

Most people know that to find the thread count, they need to look for the packaging label. While this practice isn’t incorrect, it’s a little misrepresentative. Yes, thread counts are useful to buy luxury sheets, but if you go shopping at a local retail store and notice 1,000 thread count sheets offered for $75, then chances are these sheets are not the real thing.

Thread counts let you know how soft and strong sheets are, and it’s also a great way to learn how reputable a company is. With some manufacturers, they may have a high thread count sheet but use short fibers. When they twist these fibers together, it deceptively increases the thread count.

If you can’t use the thread count, what can you do to ensure you’re getting actual luxury sheets? One way is to look at the kind of cotton you’re using. The best type of cotton is Egyptian cotton, with a close second being Pima cotton (Supima). You can also use bamboo or Tencel sheets, as they’ve been labeled as being luxury sheets.

Bear in mind that not all Egyptian cotton is real. Many manufacturers who claim to have 100 percent Egyptian cotton are actually not using 100 percent Egyptian cotton. The cotton used may have grown in Egypt, but it’s not the fibers used to create the robust threads that dictate it to be genuine Egyptian cotton. And, the real problem is trying to find a manufacturer who offers sheets that are actual Egyptian cotton compared to those who do not. The only surefire way to find actual Egyptian cotton luxury sheets is to go with a reputable brand.

It’s why most people go to the Internet to find their luxury sheets. Big stores, such as Wal-Mart or Target, are not great in vetting brands.

What makes a sheet a luxury sheet? This is an individual preference. If you want to get between sheets that are cool and crisp, you want a percale cotton sheet. If you want a silky, smooth sheet that is a bit heavier in weight, then sateen is the go-to choice. Microfiber sheets can be considered as luxury sheets if they’re made well and has the kind of texture you want.

The Cost Behind Luxury Sheets

There are numerous reasons for the cost behind luxury sheets, including the kind of fabric used and the way it’s manufactured. It can take manufacturers some time to weave together a single-play thread into a 500 thread-count per square inch. Since it’s a tedious process to source cotton, bamboo or other fibers, the cost also increases. High-quality sheets may have 10 stitches per inch, which makes the process even more tedious.

All of this affects how much the sheets will cost.

The truth of the matter is that high-quality, well-designed luxury sheets take time, effort and resources to produce, and all of this will affect how much you pay for your sheets. However, one thing to remember is that you’re paying for the durability as well.

Luxury sheets generally last longer.

Think of your clothing. You pay more for jackets, jeans, skirts and pantsuits because they are made of high-quality materials and will last longer. You don’t spend money on the trendy stuff because you know this doesn’t last long.

Look at your sheets as you would your wardrobe.

What You Should Consider When Buying Luxury Sheets

Certification

If you’re trying to stick to organic products, you want to look for the GOTS-certification label on your products. This certification means all materials used meet both social and ecological criteria. You also want to look for products with the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 rating, as it means materials in the sheets (all of them) are toxin and chemical-free.

Color

This may not be a big thing for some people, but it can help you in sleeping better. How so? Some colors produce a calming, relaxing atmosphere while others do not. You can mix and match colors in the room to produce an environment that allows you to release your stress and sleep through the night.

The dyes manufacturers used in the sheet production will also have an effect on your sleep quality. If manufacturers use strong chemical dyes, it can still be smelled even after you have washed it. You may also suffer from itching and other allergies. Be sure to go with sheets that use a natural, skin-friendly dye to produce the style you want

Material

Most people can agree that material is an important part of the sheet equation. There are all kinds of materials on the market, such as cotton, bamboo, silk, modal, etc. You choose the kind of material you like. Cotton sheets can be found in an array of densities, which means using light sheets in the warmer months and heavy sheets in the winter. What are some materials you could see in luxury bed sheets?

  • Bamboo
    • Most people don’t consider bamboo as being a great sheet material. However, bamboo has grown in immense popularity for a multitude of reasons. They are very soft but have a silk-like feel to them.
    • Bamboo fibers are long and can strength over the entire sheet – something you don’t get with cheaper materials with short fibers. The long fibers keep the bamboo sheets from pilling and enhance their durability.
    • Another great aspect of bamboo sheets is their hypoallergenic properties. They can take moisture away from the body, ensuring a dry, comfortable night while you sleep. With a breathable nature, you’ll remain cool in the warmer months.
    • For those looking for eco-friendly options, bamboo tops the list. It’s one of the fast-growing plants on the planet.
  • Egyptian Cotton
    • Egyptian cotton comes from – you guessed it – Egypt. Egyptian cotton properties are not the same as other cotton types because of the climate and how it’s harvested. Egypt’s climate is warm and dry, which cotton thrives in. It’s also handpicked, which doesn’t create a lot of stress on the fibers and ensures they stay long and straight. You don’t get this with machine-harvested cotton.
    • Egyptian cotton keeps its extra-long fibers, which produces a softer, more flexible and breathable fabric.
    • For all these reasons, Egyptian cotton is regarded as a luxury material – expensive, ranging anywhere from $100 to $1,000s. How much you pay will be dependent upon the thread count and size. If you can afford them, they are well worth the option.
    • Be aware that some less-than-honest manufacturers will claim they use Egyptian cotton but don’t.
  • Flannel
    • Flannel is well-known for its warm property in the colder seasons. Flannel derives from materials such as cotton and wool. When being manufactured, the materials are brushed, which increases the softness, nap and density. It also produces a soft, comfortable though heavy fabric to lock in heat, so you stay warm.
    • Whereas regular cotton uses thread count for measurements, flannel’s measurement is done by weight. The heavier the material, the better it will be. It’s quite soft and comfortable and extremely affordable.
  • Linen
    • Linen derives from the flax plant fibers. These sheets are more breathable and absorbent than cotton, with thick fibers that enhance the strength and crispness. After every wash, the sheets get even more comfortable.
    • Linen is regarded as a very durable fiber. Though stiff at first, it softens but is still strong. The natural fibers offer hypoallergenic properties, keeping bacteria growth at bay. However, it’s harder to weave and producing it costs more. Thus, it’s more expensive than some people feel it is worth. It can also wrinkle too easily.
  • Pima Cotton
    • Pima is another high-quality fiber that also produces extra-soft, breathable and durable sheets. Pima cotton, however, is grown in the southwest portion of the U.S. Its climate is nearly identical to Egypt’s.
    • Pima cotton’s name derives from the Native American Pima tribe or grew cotton in this area many centuries ago.
    • Pima cotton doesn’t cost as much as Egyptian cotton, but still gives you the high-quality feel that standard cotton cannot.
    • It’s also blended together with the run-of-the-mill cotton.
  • Silk
    • Most people want to have beautiful things in their lives, and when it comes to sheets, many people want the best of the best. Silk definitely fits into the best of the best category, but it also costs a lot of money and must be taken good care of.
    • Silk comes from silkworms, which create a soft, smooth, luxurious fabric that’s also hypoallergenic. It can also take moisture away from the skin in any season, so you stay comfortable as you sleep.
    • The best silk type is Mulberry, which is created when worms only eat Mulberry leaves. You want a weight of 19 or more for quality and strength.
  • Supima Cotton
    • This is a trademarked name for Pima cotton, which also abides by the purity and high-quality standards. Supima’s name is derived from Pima and Superior. The Supima Association was founded in order to promote the use of American-grown extra-long-staple cotton and ensure the manufactured products are sourced only through a reputable supply chain.
    • If cotton is designated as being Supima, it means the cotton was grown in the U.S. and has extra-long fibers. It must be able to hold in color, be strong and super comfortable. It must also be usable in the summer months – light and airy. It should also be hypoallergenic, resistant to allergens such as mold and dust mites.
    • This kind of cotton is expensive than other cotton types (and even Egyptian cotton in some cases).

Organic (Natural) Bedding

This type of bedding is wonderful for most people. It’s regarded as a luxury because it’ll cost more and offers an array of health benefits. Most people see a sheet as a necessity, but organic sheets are deemed a luxury. The fabric is typically made of organically grown material that’s manufactured so that only non-toxic or natural dyes can be used. These sheets are noted as being an eco-friendly choice for those interested in this type of bedding.

Price

There are three factors that affect how much you pay – fabric, thread count and weave. Sheets that come in a set will include the flat sheet, fitted sheet and two pillowcases, and these tend to cost more than individual pieces. If you want a queen sheet set, not on sale, the price you could pay range from $40 to more than $200.

  • Good - $40 to $70 range – 100 percent cotton or cotton/polyester blend with a 250 or less thread count. It’s not uncommon to find 100 percent jersey or cotton flannel sheets in this price range.
  • Better - $70 to $130 range – 100 percent cotton percale with a 300 to 400 thread count, although some bamboo sheets with a 230 thread count will fall into this category.
  • Even Better - $130 to $190 range – You can find 400 to 600 thread count Pima or Egyptian cotton with some hemstitch detailing.
  • Best - $200 or more range – Sheets and pillowcases tend to be sold individually and are imported. Thread counts are usually around 600 but can exceed 1,000 for 100 percent Supima or Egyptian cotton.

Shape and Size

You want sheets that fit your mattresses perfectly (or as near perfect as it can). Too-loosely fitted sheets will bunch up; too tightly fitted sheets will ride up and may pop off the corners. A perfectly-fitted sheet will give a smooth surface that enhances your comfort and eases you into a good night’s sleep. It also looks good to the eyes.

Sheets come in various sizes such as:

  • Twin
  • XL Twin
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

When you go shopping for sheets, you want to measure your mattress depth and review the package label.

Find out if the fitted sheet comes with elastic. Will it go around all the edges or just the corners? With elastic, the sheet will give a snugger feel, eliminates the bagginess and boosts your comfort level.

Thread Count

In most cases, the higher a sheet's thread count is, the softer it’s going to be. Thread counts are determined by how many threads lengthwise and widthwise are in one-inch per square inch of a fabric.

In the past, a 300-thread count was thought of as luxurious. Today, that number is far more, with counts exceeding 600. The cost of these counts is much more than your typical 300 counts.

Though thread count does indicate softness, it’s just one of many indicators. For instance, fiber used and the ply (number of threads) will affect the softness level. Beech and bamboo sheets don’t have a high thread count because the fibers are already soft and silky. Softer sheets that do have a high thread count (think sateens) are not near as durable.

Weave

You should also consider the weave when buying luxury sheets. There are two kinds of weaves – percale and sateen.

  • Percale
    • How cotton is woven makes a huge difference in how it feels against the skin. Percale is usually what five-star hotels use because 95 percent of all sleepers sleep better with it. After all, it helps with temperature regulation and keeps people cool as they sleep. It tends to last longer than sateen weave sheets and won’t pill.
  • Sateen
    • These sheets tend to have more vertically-running threads, which gives it a soft, silky feel. They tend to be extremely delicate, compared to percale bedding, but they don’t have the kind of durability that percale sheets do. They will eventually pill or become torn after a multitude of washes. If you want silky smooth against your skin, this is the choice to go with. Be sure to purchase sateen sheets with a thread count of 300 to 600.

Should You Go With A Single Sheet or A Sheet Set?

Most sheets are sold in sets, as they have everything the bed will need and in the same color print or design. Some sheet sets also come with a comforter, bed skirt or sham to give the bed a completely coordinated look. If you’re the type of person who’s looking to mix and match, then go with individual pieces.

What To Keep In Mind

When it comes to luxury sheets, it’s all going to be dependent mainly on the material choice. While thread count and weave do play a role, they are not as important as the meal. With a little bit of research, you can find the best luxury sheets for your bed or guest room.

The critical point to remember any time you shop is to think of how the sheets will affect the mood and décor of the room. Consider the color and design before you buy any kind of sheet. Then, choose a sheet set that will last long a long time and will be worth the money you pay for it.

You want sheets that will be inviting and look aesthetically pleasing. You want to create a warming atmosphere that all will want to take part in.
