Not Eco-Friendly

Microfiber is not renewable or biodegradable. Polyester and nylon are made of petrochemicals, which means they are not environmentally friendly. Prolene is a renewable type of microfiber that is made of polypropylene, but Prolene is not used to make bedding. If you only buy environmentally friendly products, microfiber sheets would not be on your list. 

Microfiber also pollutes the water. So, each time a set of microfiber sheets are washed, tiny fibers escape into the wastewater treatment plant and because they are so tiny, the filters can’t trap them. In the end, these tiny fibers are dumped into the ocean. Since they are not biodegradable, fish often eat them, which is not good at all. 

Lack Breathability 

Very tightly woven fabrics lack breathability. This means air cannot flow through the fabric to either get in or escape. Because microfiber is so tightly woven, it isn’t considered a breathable fabric. Pilling:

Tears: 

If anything, low-quality microfiber sheets will tear easily, rather than pill or fade. The tears can happen at any time and with no warning. Buying the highest quality is the best way to avoid rips and tears.

Factors to Consider When Shopping for Microfiber Sheets

Types of Materials

100% microfiber sheets are extremely soft, with a fuzzy feel that a lot of people love because it’s so warm and comfy. However, there are different types of microfiber sheets as well as manufacturing methods, so we need to explain the most common types:

Polyester Microfiber  

Polyester is a manmade synthetic material derived from a combination of coal, petroleum, water and air. The word polyester is made up of “poly” which means “many” in Greek, and “ester” which is a fundamental organic compound. Polyester is used to make many different things. Clothes account for its widest usage, but it is also used to make insulation, holograms, threads, films, plastic bottles, and as a finish on high-end wood products, like guitars and pianos. 

As far as clothes go, do you remember the men’s disco suits that were so popular in the 1970s? Today, you see polyester in a lot of sportswear, like yoga pants and active wear. Polyester is being used in a lot of today’s clothing. If you look at the tags on the clothing in most shops, you’ll find that most pieces contain some polyester. 

You’ll also find that a lot of bedding is made of polyester because it does offer some benefits over cotton and other natural fabrics. For example, polyester will not absorb moisture, so it’s basically stain-resistant. Also, polyester sheets are often preshrunk so they will not shrink in the wash. 

Brushed Microfiber  

When reading the labels on microfiber sheets, you often see the words “brushed” or “double-brushed” and these describe the process that makes them so fuzzy and warm. The brushing process is what raises the fibers on the surface, creating the fuzz. 

However, when it says “brushed” it usually means that only one side has been brushed, whereas “double-brushed” tells you that both sides have been brushed. When the sheet is double brushed it will feel equally fuzzy on both sides. But some people prefer sheets in which the top side is brushed and the bottom side not. The reason is because that fuzzy feel is just too warm for some people. 

Nylon Microfiber

Nylon is an extremely durable synthetic polyamide fabric. Because it’s so strong nylon is used for ropes, sails, fishing nets, tents, cookware, plastic machine parts, toothbrushes and more. Nylon is also widely used to make water resistant and lightweight clothing like swimwear and sports jackets. For the past 80 years microfiber has been used in stockings. 

Nylon microfiber bed sheets are not very common, but they do exist. The main advantage is that nylon is so incredibly strong, so they very rarely tear. Nylon microfiber sheets hold their color very well, so they come in a lot of fun colors. 

Microfiber Blends 

Many bedding manufacturers blend microfiber with other materials like bamboo, cotton or Tencel for a unique look and feel. Make sure you read the label, so you know what you’re buying before you make your purchase. A fabric with a microfiber/bamboo blend will have some of the properties of bamboo, making it more lightweight and breathable. This would work well for people who live in warm climates. 

Furthermore, microfiber blended with Tencel or top-quality cotton will make it more durable. However, you may find that these sheets are more expensive because that’s just the case when you blend microfiber with something more luxurious. 

Thread Count vs. GSM

Thread count applies to cotton sheets and those made of other natural fabrics, not microfiber sheets. The thickness or weight of microfiber sheets is measured in grams/square meter or GSM. Microfiber sheets range from a 55 GSM to 120 GSM. The higher the GSM the thicker and heavier the sheets. However, a high GSM does not mean you have a high-quality sheet, you need high-quality materials for that. 

Do not let yourself be tricked into thinking thread count applies to microfiber bed sheets. So, if you see an extraordinarily high number make sure you know what it applies to. If the ad or label says that a microfiber sheet feels like it has an 1800 thread count, that may be true. If it says the thread count is 1800, that’s false advertising and you need to avoid that brand. 

Fit

You also need to make sure that the microfiber sheets you buy will properly fit your mattress. If the bottom sheet fits too loosely, it could come off during the night and wrap around your legs, waking you up. Know what size mattress you have, including the thickness so that you know you’re getting sheets that will fit. Poor quality microfiber sheets will tear easily, so they wouldn’t last very long. Poor quality cotton sheets will pill and wear out sooner than you would like as well. We would recommend that you buy only high-quality sheets, whether they’re microfiber or cotton, if you want them to last you a good long time. 

Airflow & Breathability

One area where microfiber sheets differ greatly from cotton sheets is in terms of the airflow and breathability. 

Cotton is a natural fabric and widely known for having good airflow and breathability. With cotton sheets you don’t need to worry about getting hot and sweaty during the night. What affects this most is the thread count of the sheets. This tells you how many threads run vertically and horizontally in 1 square inch of fabric. Tightly woven fabrics will have a higher thread count, which means less airflow and a fabric that would retain more heat. Ideally, the best cotton sheets would have a lower thread count from 200 to 500. 

Synthetically derived microfiber sheets will not be breathable, and they will retain heat. If you want your microfiber sheets to be breathable, you can find them, but it will take a little effort. Do not look for the thread count on microfiber sheets because it doesn’t apply. If you see numbers describing the weave like 1500 or 1800 it should specify that the sheets feel like a cotton sheet with that thread count.  

When you’re evaluating microfiber sheets you need to consider the grams/square meter or GSM, which measures the thickness and weight of the sheets. The higher the GSM, the thicker and heavier the sheet will be. The range typically runs from 55 to 120 GSM on microfiber sheets. 

Feel

A lot of people prioritize the feel before anything else when it comes to bed sheets. Both cotton and microfiber sheets feel great to the touch, but not exactly the same. 

Cotton sheets typically feel soft, but a little crisp. How soft they are will depend on the length of cotton fibers used. The longer these fibers, the fewer number of ends stick out above the surface, so they’re softer. These ends that stick out is what gives cotton that rough feel. If you want soft cotton sheets look for those that are made with extra-long staple (ELS) fibers. The softest ELS cottons are Pima or Supima.
